This was nothing short of a communist invasion, in his eyes, and the patriots of Green Charter needed to rise up and confront the Red Peril. But the backlash in Green Charter represents something seldom seen since the Red Scare: a quasi-militant, homegrown resistance to the perceived threat of communism at home. But as the war over Gotion began to consume Green Charter, Riebow began to feel that the township board was behaving "too secretly." It's easy to dismiss what's happened in Green Charter as yet another sign of America's descent into dangerous incivility. Asked about Gotion's plans in Green Charter, Panetta replied, "I don't think there's any question that they are going to take advantage of that situation."

A national committee is typically overhauled after the party has a de facto or official presidential nominee. The changes normally come in the form of a new chairperson or a top official from the presidential campaign moving over to the committee. These resources are critical to Trump’s campaign as it makes plans to build out teams in key battleground states such as Michigan, Georgia, Arizona and Pennsylvania in the coming weeks and months. “The Republican National Committee will be focused like a laser on getting out the vote and protecting the ballot,” Whatley said in his remarks Friday. The steep odds facing Haley were on display in Columbia, Missouri, where Republicans gathered at a church to caucus. Supporters quickly moved to one side of the room or the other, depending on whether they favored Trump or Haley. Mike Parson signed a 2022 law that, among other things, canceled the planned March 12 presidential primary. Trump prevailed twice under Missouri's old presidential primary system.

Read previewFormer President Donald Trump won the Michigan GOP presidential primary on Tuesday, according to multiple outlets, continuing his march to the party's nomination ahead of Super Tuesday. Since January, Trump has emerged victorious in the Iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primary, Nevada caucuses, and South Carolina primary. But the GOP electorate remains enamored with the former president, judging by his track record in the earlier contests. Trump narrowly won Michigan in the 2016 general election, besting former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a state that until that year had backed every Democratic presidential nominee since 1992. The Republican made significant inroads with working-class voters in suburban Detroit and rural voters across the state.

CNN —President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won their respective parties’ primaries in Michigan on Tuesday. “We demand President Biden to take action now – bring a permanent ceasefire,” said Layla Elabed, the campaign manager for the group. The Michigan primary was moved up near the front of the Democratic presidential nominating calendar this year. Biden defeated Trump in Michigan by about 150,000 votes four years later. After Democrats, who control the state Legislature and the governor’s office, moved the Michigan primary to February 27 despite the Republican opposition, the RNC and Michigan GOP came up with the hybrid model.

Trump, meanwhile, has been working to appeal to the blue-collar and union voters who were critical to his victory in 2016. But Trump was again most focused on his grievances, opening with a 15-minute screed about the criminal and civil cases against him. With interest payments, Trump’s legal debts might now exceed a half-billion dollars — an amount it is unclear whether or not Trump can afford to pay. Trump lost the county to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020, both times by eight percentage points. The remaining 39 will be distributed by precinct delegates at a Michigan GOP state convention on March 2.

State party turmoilAhead of his visit, Trump and his allies sought to put an end to turmoil within the Michigan Republican Party, which has faced a reckoning over its readiness for the 2024 election. The state party ousted its chair, Kristina Karamo, last month in the face of internal strife and lackluster fundraising. The recent Fox News survey from Michigan found Biden leading Trump 53% to 41% among union households.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Former Congressman Pete Hoekstra has been officially recognized by the national Republican party as the Michigan GOP chairman in a vote that also affirmed that Kristina Karamo was properly removed from the position earlier this year. Some members of the Michigan GOP had coalesced last month to vote Karamo out of the position, a result that she has refused to accept. Since then, dueling factions have claimed to control the state party. Karamo was elected last February to lead the Michigan Republican Party through the 2024 presidential election after losing her secretary of state race by over 14 percentage points. In January, close to half of the Michigan GOP’s voting members came together to vote Karamo out as chair, citing fundraising woes and months of infighting.

A fake Certificate of Votes was submitted to the U.S. Senate following Michigan’s 2020 presidential election, an official testified Tuesday during a preliminary hearing for six people facing forgery and other charges for allegedly serving as false electors. But that “purported” Certificate of Votes didn't match an official document signed by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and featuring the Michigan state seal, said Dan Schwager, who served in 2020-2021 as general counsel to the secretary of the Senate. Michigan, Georgia and Nevada have charged fake electors. Schwager said Tuesday the false Michigan document arrived Jan. 5, 2021, to the U.S. Senate's mail services and that he reviewed it a few days later.

Still, Shawn Steel, a RNC committee member from California, brushed off the danger of that scenario for the GOP ticket. Still, other RNC committee members worry that the multiple court cases could distract from making the election about Biden’s record. “The criticisms generally at (RNC chair Ronna McDaniel) are coming from Trumpers,” said Bill Palatucci, an RNC committee member from New Jersey who sometimes clashes with the more pro-Trump Republicans.

That’s because a state law requires Nevada to hold a primary election, but the Nevada GOP voted to hold their own caucuses, or party-run meetings open to Republicans only. Nevada voters have received mail ballots for the Feb. 6 primary that don’t list front-runner Donald Trump’s name. Three Nevada GOP leaders overseeing the caucuses have been indicted on felony charges that they were so-called fake electors who sent certificates to Congress falsely claiming Trump won Nevada in 2020. Still, Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald has forged ahead with the caucuses. Trump himself told the crowd at the January rally to ignore the primary and attend the caucuses instead, saying “Your primary vote doesn’t mean anything.”A Nevada GOP rule states that any candidate who participates in the state-run primary may not run in the caucuses.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The recently installed chair of Michigan's Republican Party and others in the state GOP are suing to get the group's former leader, Kristina Karamo, officially declared as being removed from the post. A group of Michigan Republican state committee members voted Jan. 6 to remove Karamo, an election denier and supporter of former President Donald Trump. About 45 people, not including proxies, attended the meeting in Commerce Township where Karamo was voted out as chair. Karamo’s refusal to allow the committee and the Michigan Republican Party to move forward, particularly with an election cycle rapidly approaching, requires swift judicial intervention,” according to the lawsuit. Karamo, a former community college instructor, rose through Michigan’s Republican ranks by spreading election conspiracies after the 2020 presidential election.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan judge is expected to decide Friday morning whether to drop charges against two defendants accused of participating in a fake elector scheme after the state attorney general said the group was “brainwashed” into believing former President Donald Trump won the 2020 election. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, however, may have derailed the case by saying during a virtual event last month that the electors "legit believe" Trump won the election. But it's the only state where the accused false electors face criminal charges. At a Sept. 18 virtual event organized by liberal groups, Nessel said the group would never plea guilty because they “genuinely believe” Trump won the election. Henry and several others, including former Michigan GOP co-chair Meshawn Maddock, are scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination hearing on Oct. 12.

All 16 are facing eight criminal charges, including forgery and conspiracy to commit election forgery, that were first announced in July by state Attorney General Dana Nessel. Michigan is one of seven states where false Electoral College certificates were submitted declaring Trump the winner, despite confirmed results showing he had lost. On Sept. 18, Nessel, a Democrat, told a liberal group during a virtual event that the false electors had been “brainwashed” and “genuinely” believed Trump won in Michigan’. George MacAvoy Brown, an attorney for Henry, said in a statement that the charges require proof that Henry “intended to cheat or deceive someone” and that Nessel's comments show that wasn't the case. Henry and several others, including Maddock and Kathy Berden, Michigan’s Republican national committeewoman, are scheduled to appear for a preliminary examination hearing on Oct. 12.

Michigan's fake GOP electors surrendered their phones to avoid being recorded during a 2020 meeting. They face general forgery counts and election law forgery allegations. These 16 fake electors, charging documents say, took extra steps to keep their plot secret. The fake electors were told no recording equipment was allowed inside the building and they were asked to surrender their cell phones to safeguard against possible recording, prosecutors said. Some of the fake electors expressed frustration about how other fake electors were talking about the fake transmission of votes to Congress, according to charging documents.

Some of the GOP electors in Michigan were local activists who were recruited to serve as “fake electors,” all while inaccurately believing there was still a chance that then-President Donald Trump might secure a second consecutive term. CNN has reached out to the 16 fake electors for comment about the criminal charges. Here’s what we know about the 16 fake electors facing state charges. Meshawn Maddock, 55, was co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party during the 2020 campaign and is married to a GOP member of the Michigan House of Representatives.
